What is the age range for the Pentland Junior Singers?
We accept children from age 8 to age 14.
Where does the choir rehearse?
We usually rehearse in from September to June in line with school terms, 6-7 pm on a Tuesday evening in Balerno Parish Church, 2 Main Street, Balerno EH14 7 EH.
Does my child have to be able to read music to join the choir?
Your child does not need to be able to read music. We teach the children elements of musicianship in a fun way. Children will be given song sheets and music.
Can I bring my child to a rehearsal to see if they like it?
Yes, we welcome children to a rehersal to see if they enjoy it. Please contact us to make arrangements
Does my child require to pass an audition to join the choir?
We are a community choir and accept children with all abilties. What we require is for your child to listen and engage with rehearsals.
How much does it cost to join the Pentland Junior Singers?
Fees are £91 per year, payable in 2 instalments. £45.50 in September and £45.50 in January.
Who Takes the Choir?
Isabella Gonzalez Diaz is our musical director is a trained French horn player, singer and conductor. Alison Marr is a member of the adult choir and the Junior Choir Coordinator and attends every week.
Are adults members of the Disclosure Scotland PVG scheme?
Yes. All adults who regularly help with the Pentland Junior Singers have PVG membership.
Do you wear a uniform?
The children do not wear a uniform at rehearsals. We have red polo shirts that are given out for concert and competition performance. The children wear black trousers and skirts and black shoes with the polo shirts.

Yes we have a child protection policy
When can I hear my child sing?
The Pentland Junior Singers take part in the twice yearly concerts that are held by the Pentland Singers. There is a Christmas concert in December and a summer concert in June. The concerts are usually held on a Wednesday and Thursday evening in Balerno High School.
We occasionally hold a short performance in the church.
Does the choir take part in singing competitions?
Yes. The Pentland Junior Singers have participated in the Edinburgh Competition Festival which is held in March. We have entered three times and have been successful on all occasions. The choir received a highly commended award in their first competition up against chamber choirs from private schools. We won the Scots song section in 2017 and 2019 and the Choir of Mixed Ages in 2019.
Will I have to help with the choir?
We run a parent helper rota when we have over 20 children in the choir. We also request parent help at the concerts and for the singing competition.
Should my child bring anything to rehearsals?
Children should bring a folder to keep their song sheets in, a pencil and drinking water if desired.
Do you have a behaviour policy?
Yes. We promote a fun experience for children. We expect children to engage and follow instructions in order to have a positive experience.
Does my child have to take part in performances and competitions?
The children are expected to take part in the concerts and competitions. We find that the children feel empowered as it develops their confidence and team working skills.
